With an awesome display of offensive firepower, superb rebounding and stifling defense, the Gawad Kalinga (GK) Warriors dismantled Wala Sa Ayos (WSA), 71-39 to enter the finals of the 2009 PAAD Palaro Basketball Championship. The win also preserved the Warriors unbeaten record. The Warriors, gunning for the championship with a perfect season, will now face the Baltimore Dragons in the finals on Saturday, August 15.
It was an intense game throughout and it was WSA who cracked in the early going. With the pressure of a tournament favorite, and amidst the brouhaha of the light transparent gold shirts which they used atop their normal uniforms, the Warriors showed character and poise in winning over WSA. The PSC allowed the use of the gold shirt which is a symbol of the team with the best record in the semifinals.
Earlier, WSA hang tough with the Warriors, down by only four at 11-7, with 17 minutes remaining in the first half. However, MVP candidate Yogi Veranga with the supporting cast of Leo Yanogacio, Ryan De Gracia and Ryan De Guzman engineered a 15 -5 lightning attack to pad the lead to 26-12, time down to 6 minutes in the first half.
WSA tried in vain to get back to the game with the efforts of Michael Alegarbes, but time in time again they were frustrated by the tight defense of the Warriors who clogged the lanes to prevent easy shots at the basket. A rebound and a follow up shot by Veranga with a minute remaining put the dagger in the heart of WSA, as the Warriors built a commanding 33-17 lead and enroute to a 35-17 halftime lead. It was clear that captain Herb Monsalud and the Warriors were all up to business to put the game away early on.
Earlier in the first half, WSA protested that the Warriors should be penalized as one of its players does not have his usual regular uniform. The head referee ruled that this is not a problem because the transparent gold shirts of the Warriors atop their normal uniforms were the uniforms themselves. WSA protested this ruling but cooler heads prevailed and WSA finally decided to play on.
The Warriors continued their domination in the second half. A layup by Warrior veteran Yanogacio pushed the lead to 43-23 with 18 minutes remaining. Sensing for the Pacquiao knockout blow, Veranga and De Gracia dropped a 9-1 bomb as the Warriors extended the lead to 52-24 time down to 14 minutes.
Unlike in their previous games, there were no scoring runs in the second half this time for WSA to the dismay of its cheering fans. WSA’s top scorers Lester Dabu and JP Raymundo were held to only 6 points and 5 points, respectively. The Warriors were also dominant in the boards, outrebounding WSA, 15-5.
Veranga had a game high 21 points and 5 rebounds for the Warriors, followed by De Gracia and De Guzman with 13 and 12 points respectively. For WSA, Alegarbes and Armando Concepcion top scored with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

As expected GK won but the game itself is not at all exciting.
The only action I saw was when the 2 coaches were fighting about the uniforms.

Don't want to give names but there are 2 players bitching too much about the ref's decision on the uniform.
Sportmanship is nowhere to be found on that game.
And so I ended up watching the Youth Game which I would say is far more entertaining.

Until Sat I was a fan of WSA mainly because they fought against the odds to get to the finals. I mean nobody expects them to be in the top 4. That alone is quite a big accomplishment but if you watch the game, it was a big disappointment.
If they only played just like before and even if GK got 100 points lead, they could have exited the tournament with pride.
Just asking, sabi ng WSA ang PAAD committee is favoring GKW. Totoo ba eto. Eh kung ganon pala bakit pa nag pa laro ang PAAD.
I absolutely agree with FlyingButiki. There were two WSA playeras na daig pa ang ewan na di mapakali. Sore losers ba tawag dun? The nerve to go to other people and bad mouth GK, PAAD and other people except themselves. Sana naman wag ganon. Tanggapin ang pagkatalo. Imagine ang GK ok lang sa kanila to wear that yellow hilarious outfit kahit mag mukha silang katawa tawa matuloy lang ang laban tapos yung WSA parang sila pa tong may gana to complain an dcomplain kahit kanino. • To strengthen the unity within the Filipino-American Community through competitive sports
• To strengthen the character and enriching the experience of the Filipino- American Youth
• To strengthen the spirit of sportsmanship, respect for rules, volunteerism, and service among the Filipino-American Youth through competitive sports
PAAD officials will not favor or tolerate any favoritism of Teams as this will be opposite to the PAAD Missions. PAAD would like to accomplish those missions and bring the best bastketball games to everyone. We hope you will enjoy and watch the finals.

After the game, I saw him talking to almost every team last Saturday complaining about lots of things.
Hahahaha. His arguments is quite hilarious and I would say some of it is close to slander.
I think from what I got from him, he wants GK to default the game because of uniform or tapping the board. How ridiculous is that ?
The worst penalty they can get is probably just a technical not losing the game.
Of course there's a lot rumors circulating now but I ask around and I went to the source.
As much as I want to divulge the info, it would be best if it now comes from PSC, GK or WSA.
For now I'm looking forward to a good game between the Dragons and the Warriors which both deserves to be in the the championship.

Gk said that WSA should wear the yellow jersey because they are the 1 team..and wsa wont agree because they thought it was gk's fault to wear white jersey(knowing that wsa has a white uniform)then ,the comittee said that they should do a coin flip,wsa won that and Gk wore the yellow...thats the story..

GK still showed their sportsmanship in this game. kahit sila ang top team sa liga, they still put away their pride and wore those ridiculous yellow jerseys over their jerseys. GK had complete white uniforms that they wore the week before. WSA is saying they should have default because hinde completo uniform nila? are you kidding me? At the end of the day, GK put on those ridiculous yellow practice jerseys and still did damage. as a result of all the complaints WSA did all game and all the dirty plays they showed.. they still GOT OWNED!

Ayun lang naman ang narinig ko. Nilapitan ang grupo namin ng WSA players at sinabing dapat daw default ang warriors dahil iba-iba nag uniform na suot. Hindi daw tinawagan ng PAAD na technical dahil may favoritism. Nagtatanong lang po dahil hindi ko napanood ang laban dahil nanunuod kami ng youth game.
Dapat pala nag bubad na lang ang warriors at nilamig kung mangdadaya din pala sila.

During that time that WSA was complaining about the gkW uniform I confront Coach Herb and informed him about one of the WSA player wearing a wrong and incomplete uniform but Coach Herb told me it is Okay and it is only a game.
I think Warriors have a legit case of calling for technical but they did'nt.

Wow!!! I did not know that there's a lot at stake for this Palaro. Imagine teams and players bickering and complaining instead of gracefully congratulating the winning teams. Magkano ba ang prize ng panalo? Or is it just for the bragging rights?
I think the main problem is that one or two players from WSA was telling everybody that the PAAD committee was favoring GKW. Sinisiraan nila ang League itself. Sana kung may pinanigan ang PAAD WSA was wearing the practice jersey without the flip coin.

I thought it was sad that energy was being wasted on arguing about the uniforms. A coin flip settled it in the end, but there were still arguments being made after. If anything a technical could have been called. Saying GK should default is ridiculous.
From what I observed, it looked like individual players on WSA brought down the team in creating nonsense instead of focusing on the game. Issues with a uniform is a tiny problem! In addition, they continued to show ill feelings after the game.
Anyways, Congratulations to the GK Warriors & Dragons making the finals! Looks like it will be a good game. I'm sorry I'll miss it. GOOOOOOOO GK!

Hay naku!!! Mukhang hindi naman tama na siraan ang PAAD. Buti nga at meron nag-oorganize ng mga palaro na ganire. Kung ganyan din lang ang gagawin ng iba, dapat eh huwag na lang silang sumali.
Kung gusto nila ng sarili nilang rules, bakit hindi sila gumawa ng sarili nilang liga.

There was no problem about the uniform because it was settled by coin flip. There was misunderstanding between GKW and the referee. The referee advised us (GKW) to wear our blue uniform that's why you notice that our bench players are all in blue while our first five was wearing the gold practice uniform playing. On my first substitution, my two players were wearing blue uniform as directed by the referee but one referee disagrees and told them to wear the gold. One player did wear the gold practice jersey over his blue uniform and the other one was changing his blue uniform when the ref advised him to just wear the gold. That is why we have two players wearing different jersey. WSA want a technical but the ref told them it is okay and no technical was called.
I didn’t hear WSA during the game asking for a default because of the uniform.
Yes, I told the ref. that WSA should wear the practice jersey because GKW is first on the standing in front of WSA to divert their attention on the uniform not on the game. Pansensya na pareng Mike. It is my Mind Tactic so your team will take it personal and you guys did. Pasensya na pare. I hope you still invite me sa inyong concert.
Many people were asking why WSA was in the final four and I found out the answer. WSA team is a true warrior. They didn’t stop defending and playing the whole time even they are down 10, 20, or even 30 points. WSA is a team that you can not push around.
